Overview OoT-Business Planning (OoT-BP) has an experiential, inside-out approach. The focus is on the development of the business plan as a basis for starting a new company (entrepreneurship) or starting a new business within existing organizations (intrapreneurship). To ensure that OoT-BP provides a real-life learning experience in recognizing and exploring the commercial opportunities of science and technology based knowledge: 1. Participants have to write a fully developed business plan that can be presented to stakeholders such as scientists that invented the technology, the institutions that own the technology and investors that are necessary to fund its commercialization. 2. The business plans are to be based on realistic, science- and technology- driven ideas or inventions. These may come from the participants themselves but more often will be ideas and (patented) inventions conceived by research staff of the Leiden University Faculty of Science or the Leiden University Medical Centre (LUMC) A number of such ideas and inventions (see preliminary list here) is made available through cooperation with Leiden University Research and Innovation Services (LURIS). (For more information on the activities of LURIS please look at www.luris.leidenuniv.nl) 3. Participants will usually work in teams of 2-4 persons to be able to accommodate and to enhance the leaning experience, though, if circumstances so require, individual participation may be allowed. 4. Participants will interact with scientists or the inventors, i.e. the staff that has done the research on which the business idea is based. The role of these staff members may differ from that of scientific consultant to being actively involved as an academic entrepreneur. 5. It is mandatory to participate in the second and third round of the New Venture business plan competition. Students should preferably also attend the networking activities that are organized in the context of this competition such as seminars and award ceremonies. Networking is important when setting up a new business and joining these activities offers participants excellent opportunities to meet a variety of people that can contribute to the development of the business plan. Deliverables OoT-BP - A fully developed business plan to be submitted in the 3rd round of the New Venture competition. - A formal presentation of the business plan for a jury consisting of students, business professionals and investors. Tests To ensure that students have sufficiently mastered the knowledge that serves as the foundation for creating a business plan, course participants will have to pass a number of on-line Blackboard tests. Timing of these tests will vary based on the time frame for the development of the business plan. When participants fail to pass the tests on time, they are to do an oral examination instead. Schedule OoT-BP OoT-BP will formally start in February 2009. But teams may form and start before, e.g. by participating in round 1 or 2 of the New Venture competition. During the course period, there will be one plenary progress meeting per month -also featuring guest speakers- on Thursday, from 16.00 to about 20.00 hours. The dates for the plenary progress meetings will be announced later. Next to the plenary progress meetings, teams will have individual feedback and coaching meetings. If possible, coaches from companies on the BioScience Park will assist the teams. Partaking in the New Venture competition also offers coaching from the New Venture Coaching Network. Each team will set up an individual time schedule containing test dates (see below), specific deadlines and coaching appointments. Course materials Participants will have to familiarize themselves with the New Venture Handbook "Starting-up - Achieving success with professional business planning" developed by McKinsey & Co and with some additional readings. The New Venture Handbook is available for free. The additional readings will be provided by the SBB staff. Course load The course load is 5 EC, about 140 study hours. Grading Grading of OoT-BP will be based on - the written business plan (40 %) - the participation in course sessions (20%) - the presentation of the business plan (20%) - the BlackBoard tests (20%)
